What is a Graphic Designer?
|
What is Desktop Publishing?
|
A designer creatively communicates your idea, your product and your solution to the world. A designer knows that regardless of the medium, the fundamentals of executing a design never change. But a graphic designer is not a desktop publisher. A good graphic designer has strong interpersonal and marketing skills, in addition to a keen eye and an adept knowledge of electronic media packages.
The intelligent use of colour,
topography, line,
space,
shape and
balance will always make the difference between a good design and a bad design. Each design is different.
To understand how design will solve a particular communication problem, the designer asks the following questions:
What is the message?
What will the audience see?
How will they feel?
And most important,
what will they understand and take away with them?
Graphic artists work with a variety of materials, including film media, animation, sound, images, illustration, type, color, and “white space.” The first step of any project is to identify the needs of the client. The designer must also consider the target market, taking social or cultural considerations into account. The process normally starts with a hand-drawn or electronic sketch of the layout, followed by a mockup presented for approval. A mockup that is attractive but fails to convey the proper message or serve the needs of the product in some way will be rejected. But The medium does not define the designer: it is the designer who defines the medium. Talent, training and instinct are more important than the medium.

Desktop publishers use computer software to format and combine text, data, photographs, charts, and other graphic art or illustrations into prototypes of pages and other documents that are to be printed. They then may print the document using a high resolution printer or they may send the materials, either in print form or electronically, to a commercial printer. Examples of materials produced by desktop publishers include books, brochures, calendars, magazines, newsletters and newspapers, packaging, and forms.
Desktop publishers typically design and create the graphics that accompany text, convert photographs and illustrations into digital images, and manipulate the text and images to display information in an attractive and readable format. They design page layouts, develop presentations and advertising campaigns, and do color separation of pictures and graphics material. Some desktop publishers (like Blue Moose Design Services) may write some of the text or headlines used in newsletters or brochures. They also may translate electronic information onto film or other traditional media if the final product will be sent to an off-set printer. As companies bring the production of marketing, promotional, and other kinds of materials in-house, they increasingly employ desktop publishers to produce such materials in house.
Desktop publishers use a computer and appropriate software to enter and select formatting properties, such as the size and style of type, column width, and spacing. Embracing new technology allows a designer to explore new ideas and discover fresh ways of doing things.

What is Digital Photography?
|
What is Website Design? |
Digital photography is a form of photography that utilizes digital technology to make digital images of subjects. Until the advent of digital technology, photography used photographic film to create images which could be made visible by photographic processing. Digital images can be displayed, printed, stored, manipulated, transmitted, and archived using digital and computer techniques, without chemical processing.
Digital photography is one of several forms of digital imaging. Digital images are also created by computer software such as 3D graphic and vector graphic programs. Digital images can also be made by scaning conventional photographic images

Web site design or web design are terms whose definitions vary by different schools of thought. Rather than trying to explain the different opinions that exist about the design of web sites, we'll try to focus on our very practical definition.
Successful web design involves more than just the creation of a beautiful piece of art work. It is rather, the construction of a sometimes multi-purpose vehicle on the internet, to accomplish a desired end. The basic elements that determine the success of website design or web site construction are appearance, usability and visibility.
The media or method used to create the appearance of a web site can have a direct influence on its usability and visiblity. Web sites built using the techniques of flash multimedia are very often great works of art, and are beautiful to look at if you have the time, but are usually flops when it comes to accomplishing their purpose.
Blue Moose Design Services has designed several successful websites that have retained the basic premise of appearance, usability and visibility
